Is an extended warranty on my car a good deal?

Is an extended warranty on my car a good deal?

Is an extended warranty on my car a good deal? At Central Garage in Pataskala we are asked this question quite often. Understanding warranties and how they work is essential in making a good choice. Think of the warranty in much the same way you consider health insurance coverage. Your health insurance policy will have a deductable, co-pays, and a perhaps a list of uncovered services. Some procedures may be capped at specific amounts. The better your coverage, the higher your premium and you can expect out of pocket expenses with every policy. Extended vehicle warranties work the same way. We have had mixed experiences with warranty companies – ranging from great coverage that pays well to very limited coverage that pays very little. Our best advice is to read the contract carefully and ask questions before you buy! To assume that your failed engine will be replaced free of cost is a misconception. In mo ... read more

Describing Car Problems to a Mechanic

Describing Car Problems to a Mechanic

Do you ever get the feeling that something might be wrong, but you can't put your finger on what it is? Car problems are not always as obvious as our Grandson's wardrobe problems, but you know your car. You drive it every day and know its little squeaks, moans and groans. If you tune your senses to observe your car, you could be your own front line defense against unexpected problems this winter. Be aware of changes in the way it drives, handles, and stops. Does it feel different, sound different, or have you noticed any different smells? Does it take a few seconds longer to start than it used to? Are there any new warning lights on the dash? Does the heat seem as warm as it should be? All these observations could be early signs of a problem that may be easy to correct if found quickly. The beauty in this type of service is that it can be done before it becomes an emergency – before a small problem become ... read more

Is my car battery weak?

Is my car battery weak?

Batteries are a huge part of modern life. Think of how many battery chargers you have. Having a strong battery in your car is very important during the extreme conditions of Ohio's winter season, and 70 percent of batteries don't last for 4 years. There are some things that you can do to extend the life of your battery. First, keep it clean. If you see it getting dirty or greasy, let us know at Central Garage Co Inc and we can clean it off. A dirty battery runs hotter, and that shortens its life. If your battery terminals are corroded, let us take a look at that, too. We can clean them, and if the corrosion has gotten into the battery cables, we can replace them. Also, running your battery way down is bad for it. Things like running the headlights or watching a DVD player with the car turned off can deeply deplete your battery. The typical battery can only take about 10 of those deep cycle depletions before it gives up the ghost. Because we often take short trips around Rey ... read more

How Can I Improve My Gas Mileage?

How Can I Improve My Gas Mileage?

Nothing beats regular preventative maintenance to increase the lifespan and dependability of your vehicle. The good news is – this preventative maintenance will give you a boost in your fuel economy as well. Some gas saving tips won’t cost you anything, or very little; for example check and adjust tire pressures as needed. An underinflated tire increases rolling resistance adding up to 3% in gas consumption! Tire pressures change as the weather changes, so check monthly or even weekly if possible. Keeping your tires properly inflated will also allow them to wear evenly; you’ll be less likely to need new tires prematurely. You can also replace a dirty or clogged engine air filter to add to your fuel economy. Most filters range from $25.00 to $35.00 dollars and play an important part in protecting more expensive parts such as the mass air flow sensor. If your check engine light is on, have i ... read more

A Safe Road Trip Requires a Little Planning

A Safe Road Trip Requires a Little Planning

A deer caused this accident, but humans are responsible for most traffic accidents. With holiday driving in full swing make a plan to be as safe as you can on the road. Distracted driving accounts for a high percentage of all car accidents. We all know we should not use our cell phones, but what about that fast food snack in one hand with the steering wheel in the other? Are you meeting someone and need to freshen your lipstick, change the radio station, or reach for something that fell in the floor or behind the seat? It only takes a second to lose control of your vehicle. Are these things really that important? Symptoms of driver fatigue include frequent yawning, burning or heavy eyes, daydreaming and drifting within lanes of traffic. Get good rest before you begin your trip. Avoid a heavy meal and drinking, take a break at least every two hours, and share driving responsibilities if possible. If you are slee ... read more

What does the cabin air filter do and when should I replace it?

What does the cabin air filter do and when should I replace it?

You breathe the air pushed through the cabin air filter – take a close look at the dirt and debris clogging this example! Also consider this, the heating and air conditioning system generates condensation. Moisture produces mold and mildew. The cabin air filter will keep the air you breathe cleaner and fresher! Does a dirty cabin air filter hurt my car? Not in the same way a dirty engine air filter will. However, it can diminish the flow of air from your heating and AC system. On really hot and really cold days you will be more comfortable if the filter is clean. We suggest you replace the cabin filter once a year, however if you have seasonal allergies you might want to consider it more often. Central Garage is centrally located near Reynoldsburg, Pataskala, Pickerington, and Blacklick. We are your one stop car care facility

Is the thermostat in my car bad?

Is the thermostat in my car bad?

Help, I have no heat in my car! Do I have a bad thermostat? Maybe! This picture shows 3 different thermostats; one in pieces and one with rust stains to compare with a new, never installed part. The same coolant, a mixture of antifreeze and water, that protects your engine from freezing in the winter, and overheating in the summer, circulates into the dash area of your car as its only source of heat. Believe it or not, we often get complaints of “no heat” before the customer realizes there is not enough coolant in their car to protect the engine. Over time, the coolant circulating within different types of metal in your engine causes an electrical current to form, breaking down and contaminating the coolant, wearing the hoses from the inside out. We recommend a coolant flush as part of your regular preventative maintenance every 35,000 miles. You want to avoid rust in the coolant, which ruins not o ... read more

Wiper Blades an Important Safety Item

Wiper Blades an Important Safety Item

You should really think about wipers as part of your cars important safety system. We should think about maintaining safety – not just responding when our wiper blades fail: how many times have you been caught off-guard by the first storm of the season with a streaky windshield you can barely see out of, or with no washer fluid? Wiper blades are exposed to heat and sun, cold and ice. It’s no wonder that they get dry, brittle and torn. Here is an important tip, never use your wipers to remove frost, snow or ice! This will not only damage the blade, but the wiper arms and transmission as well – causing costly repairs. Now is a good time to verify that you have an ice scraper and snow brush in your car. Why not splurge and get a scraper that has a built in, cozy hand mitt? We recommend changing wiper blades twice a year – before they’re so damaged that they don’t work. If you ... read more
