A Safe Road Trip Requires a Little Planning

A Safe Road Trip Requires a Little Planning

A deer caused this accident, but humans are responsible for most traffic accidents. With holiday driving in full swing make a plan to be as safe as you can on the road. Distracted driving accounts for a high percentage of all car accidents. We all know we should not use our cell phones, but what about that fast food snack in one hand with the steering wheel in the other? Are you meeting someone and need to freshen your lipstick, change the radio station, or reach for something that fell in the floor or behind the seat? It only takes a second to lose control of your vehicle. Are these things really that important? Symptoms of driver fatigue include frequent yawning, burning or heavy eyes, daydreaming and drifting within lanes of traffic. Get good rest before you begin your trip. Avoid a heavy meal and drinking, take a break at least every two hours, and share driving responsibilities if possible. If you are slee ... read more

What does the cabin air filter do and when should I replace it?

What does the cabin air filter do and when should I replace it?

You breathe the air pushed through the cabin air filter – take a close look at the dirt and debris clogging this example! Also consider this, the heating and air conditioning system generates condensation. Moisture produces mold and mildew. The cabin air filter will keep the air you breathe cleaner and fresher! Does a dirty cabin air filter hurt my car? Not in the same way a dirty engine air filter will. However, it can diminish the flow of air from your heating and AC system. On really hot and really cold days you will be more comfortable if the filter is clean. We suggest you replace the cabin filter once a year, however if you have seasonal allergies you might want to consider it more often. Central Garage is centrally located near Reynoldsburg, Pataskala, Pickerington, and Blacklick. We are your one stop car care facility

Is the thermostat in my car bad?

Is the thermostat in my car bad?

Help, I have no heat in my car! Do I have a bad thermostat? Maybe! This picture shows 3 different thermostats; one in pieces and one with rust stains to compare with a new, never installed part. The same coolant, a mixture of antifreeze and water, that protects your engine from freezing in the winter, and overheating in the summer, circulates into the dash area of your car as its only source of heat. Believe it or not, we often get complaints of “no heat” before the customer realizes there is not enough coolant in their car to protect the engine. Over time, the coolant circulating within different types of metal in your engine causes an electrical current to form, breaking down and contaminating the coolant, wearing the hoses from the inside out. We recommend a coolant flush as part of your regular preventative maintenance every 35,000 miles. You want to avoid rust in the coolant, which ruins not o ... read more

Wiper Blades an Important Safety Item

Wiper Blades an Important Safety Item

You should really think about wipers as part of your cars important safety system. We should think about maintaining safety – not just responding when our wiper blades fail: how many times have you been caught off-guard by the first storm of the season with a streaky windshield you can barely see out of, or with no washer fluid? Wiper blades are exposed to heat and sun, cold and ice. It’s no wonder that they get dry, brittle and torn. Here is an important tip, never use your wipers to remove frost, snow or ice! This will not only damage the blade, but the wiper arms and transmission as well – causing costly repairs. Now is a good time to verify that you have an ice scraper and snow brush in your car. Why not splurge and get a scraper that has a built in, cozy hand mitt? We recommend changing wiper blades twice a year – before they’re so damaged that they don’t work. If you ... read more

TEAM CENTRAL – Together we accomplish much!

My Mother always said, Two heads are better than one. It's true when we work together great thinks can be accomplished. Central Garage is celebrating twenty years in business but collectively we have 115 years of experience represented in our staff of technicians and service writers. Each employee brings a unique set of skills to our business that allows our team to give customers exceptional service. Mike and I are thankful for our exceptional staff and great customers! Recently I was reading the history of the March of Dimes another very successful team approach to problem solving. Eddie Cantor came up with that name and until then fund-raising for polio was promoted by Birthday Balls held for President Roosevelt each January. Mr. Cantor said, The March of Dimes will enable all persons, even the children, to show our President that they are with him in this battle against this disease. Nearly everyone can send in a dime, or several dimes. However, it takes only ten dimes to make ... read more

Car Nuts are born that way!

Car Nuts are born that way!

I've come to realize that car nuts are born that way! According to his Mother, Mike always chose a car from the toy department and was building model cars long before he started school. Mike recalls how impressed he was that his kindergarten teacher drove a brand new 1958 Impala! As an adolescent he read all the Henry Gregor Felson books about teenage hot rod drivers and Hot Rod Magazine. There have been hundreds of models built over the years and quite a few antique and classic cars restored. Cars have been his hobby and livelihood for more than fifty years. Recently he has enjoyed helping our grandson Jonathan start his own model car hobby. Perhaps the love of cars came from Mike's Grandfather who ran Central Garage of Clearfield, Pa during the 1920s. You can see pictures of that business on the walls in our waiting room  ... read more

Pot Holes

Pot Holes

Potholes cause more problems than you may be aware of! Have you ever started your grocery shopping and found the cart you had chosen did not roll easily, or in a straight line? It's very annoying when the wheels on the cart make noise or vibrate as you try to maneuver throughout the store. My friends and I laugh about “test driving” the cart before we start. Now imagine your car's wheels; do they roll straight and smoothly; what are the consequences if they don't? Have you noticed your car pulls in one direction rather than maintaining a straight path? Do you feel your car sway when you make a routine turn? Does the front of your car dive down when braking, or sink down in the back when accelerating form a stop? Do you notice excessive bounce over rough roads or railroad tracks, or vibration at higher speeds? You may even have the sensation of having to wrestle with the steering wheel! These are common complaints this time of year. Everyone knows ... read more

Central Garage Timing Belt

Central Garage Timing Belt

Believe it or not, this is a picture of the remnants of a timing belt! The estimate to perform a complete timing belt job including the water pump, and all the tensioners and pulleys in the timing belt system as preventative maintenance was $900.00. It seems like a lot doesn’t it! Although this maintenance was due and recommended at 100,000 miles, it was never performed. The car had 150,000 miles when it suddenly stopped running and had to be towed in. We found that the water pump had locked up and one tensioner came apart. When the remaining pulleys tried to turn the timing belt it generated heat, melted and literally shredded the belt. More bad news, this is an interference engine which means it will bend the valves in the cylinder head when the timing belt fails. The new estimate to get the car repaired is nearly $4000.00! Some shops try to save the customer money by replacing only the timing belt. But it’s important to note in this case, both the water pump and one ten ... read more
